From the Introduction:
We will remember 2020 as the year of collective grief. For Australians, in particular, we began the year grieving—for our native forests and wildlife. The clean-up had just commenced and another wildfire arrived, this time sweeping the world. This anthology, the 8th volume of Grieve, contains personal experiences of the bushfires and the virus. These writers have unpacked the unfathomable for many of us. And other writers published here, against a background of a world perhaps forever changed, share with us their private losses: bedside vigils, job loss, loss of country, loss of child, post natal depression, cancer in remission, cancer in its final grip. These pieces were delivered with such profundity that we are left gasping and sometimes weeping.
“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.” — Lord of the Rings, J.R.R.Tolkein.
